Recently I was spending time at my sister’s home in Prospect, Kentucky and had the privilege of being present (or just minutes short) at the birth of a foal.
The thoroughbred colt, born at 1:25 a.m. had us laughing as he blinked in wide-eyed wonder at his new world. It always amazes me when I see those long legs and wonder just how it is exactly that they are folded up in the mare for so long. Typically foals just hours old can’t see very well, but once this colt stood up you’d never know it. He was into everything he could get his mouth on. His mother seemed a bit surprised herself at what had appeared in the straw beside her, but totally understandable since this was her first.

How precious! You were so lucky to be there.
Aw…
Hi Desert Survivor and Mustang Lover; Welcome to Nicker!
I was very blessed to be at this happy occasion. Also, too when he was turned out to pasture for the first time, about three days old. Seeing the world through a set of brand new eyes–very sweet. Ttring to get a nibble of the green grass under his tiny hooves was a task for him and his long legs.
